Psalm 11-15 Through NT Glasses

What it means is that person views life through a filter. A filter that can take even difficult situations and find the good in it. Well in a similar way, when we read any portion of the Old Testament, we must remember to see it through the eyes of our New Covenant Redemption. We need our ‘NT tinted’ glasses to correctly understand the Old Testament.

Remember that the Old Testament, including the Psalms, is written by people who were not born again. They knew God in a measure, but didn’t know God like we know Him. Therefore, some of what they say and did doesn’t apply to us today. We can learn from and be blessed by what is written in the Old Testament, however, most of it is written to the Jews, not to the New Testament Church.

I could pick several examples from our reading this week, but here’s just one. The 15th Psalm starts by asking a question. ‘Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary?’… it then answers with a list of do’s and dont's. Well, if we are not careful we will think that the way to dwell in the Sanctuary of God is through works. But remember, the Old Covenant was based on the works and the law. In other words, what a person did or didn’t do.

However, the New Covenant, is called a better covenant, based on better promises. One way it is better, is that it is based on Grace and the finished work of Jesus – who is the fulfillment of all the law.

So, all we have to do is accept Jesus and walk in the light of our redemption! Therefore, if Psalm 15 was written to a New Covenant believer it would answer the question about who can dwell in the Sanctuary of the Lord very differently, by simply stating that those who received Jesus as savior and been born again have free access to the Father and may dwell in His House forever!

For this reason, though we can learn a lot from the Old Covenant and certainly be blessed by it, let’s remember that we must always see it through the eyes of our New Covenant redemption. It is then, that we will correctly divide the Word of Truth. And it’s the Truth, correctly divided and applied to our lives, that makes us free.

So put on your NT tinted glasses enjoy and be blessed by the Psalms this week! the end.
