This Week’s Chapters: James 4 – 1 Peter 3
Pastor Claire Morton
Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming – James 5:7
Patience is such a wonderful gift. It is linked in so many ways to the other fruits of the Spirit.
If you love someone you are patient with them.
Think of the joy you feel when you have waited patiently for a gift and then suddenly you have received it.
When we learn to wait patiently there is amazing peace in our lives.
When we are patient with someone out of love it causes kindness to arise in our hearts.
We wait patiently for the Lord to answer our prayers as we know that we will see His goodness.
A patient person has often learnt to persevere and this in turn produces faithfulness. See 5:11
A patient person is gentle as they are not easily angered and annoyed by others.
Through patience we learn to be self-controlled: To put others before ourselves and to listen to others.
James commends us in 5:8 to “be patient and stand firm because the Lord’s coming is near”. He uses the example of a farmer in verse 7 “See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains”.
We need to learn the value of patience: of persevering and waiting patiently for answers to our prayers; of being patient with others when they seem slower than us or don’t understand; of being self-controlled.
The farmer knows that eventually he will harvest his crop, it is a certainty but he also knows that his crop is valuable. We wait for the Lord because we know whatever we receive from the Lord is valuable. However, we also wait for one another because we know that the fruit produced in their lives and in our lives through patience is also valuable.
If you are filled with the Holy Spirit, God has already given you the seeds of patience, water those seeds with the daily receiving of His Spirit so they grow into ripe fruit and declare over your life that “I am patient because I have the patient One living in me!”
Have a wonderful week as you wait patiently for the Lord.
