This Weeks Chapters: 2 John – Revelation 2
Pastor Alan Morton
Jude writes to church leaders and members alike when he writes his letter effectively saying “Keep the main things in focus”.
v18-19 “There will be scoffers … people who divide you … who don’t have the spirit”. There will always be those who will oppose you and oppose Christ but you can’t let them affect you ... you can’t let them rule your life ... you can’t because there is work to do!
v22-23 “Those who doubt … those in the fire … those whose clothes are stained” need us to be properly focused. They are looking to find someone who will lift them and show them mercy, someone who understands how to make right choices. These people are the main thing!!
v20 You and I have a “most holy faith” – there is nothing ordinary about us or what we believe.
BUT – The job of building up our faith belongs to us!!!
v20 “Build yourselves up in your most holy faith” echoes Paul’s words to Timothy “Fan into flame the gift of God” (2 Tim 1 v6) and “Keep … what you heard … as the pattern of sound teaching” (2 Tim 1 v13)
There is nothing passive or automatic about our faith. Either we are activating our faith to help others, seeking God ideas and depending upon the Spirit to show us the timing.
OR we are switched off. There is no in between, middle position! We are either focused or out of focus!
Jude reminds us that this focus comes from “Praying in the Spirit” from actually allowing our spirit to tune into the Lord because this “Keeps us in God’s love” and it is God’s love that compels us to reach out. When we pray in tongues we are allowing that love to begin to be expressed in us and as we go on praying that love builds up inside us like an electric charge just waiting for someone to touch us.
So let’s be focused … on the right things … people!

- Pastor Matt Excellent! I'm focused on the race ahead, and I'm making the main things, the main thing! Praying in tongues ALOT!!!!
- Martin K I'm focused on love - especially in this festive season! Love for our leaders past and present, love for our local body, the church at WHBC. Also love 'to the loveless, that they might lovely be' as the old hymn sang. It's easy to love the favourites, but let's also love those who are hardest to love in the natural, for whom extra grace is required. That's the privilege Christ has called us to! Praying in tongues especially helps us to see these people and be the light of love to those that need it the most.
